Teaching Philosophy

The StrategicGolfer.com approach to "learning golf" is very simple. Learn a "simple" and effective golf swing and then find golf greatness in learning how to "Play the Game". Pursuing the perfect golf swing is road well traveled leading to a dead end.  The perfect golf swing is a myth.

Good fundamentals are the starting point for good golf.  Good fundamentals include a good grip, posture, and alignment combined with good  mechanics.

Golf swing mechanics influence the direction in which the club approaches the golf ball leading to effective results. Returning to the fundamentals and mechanics of golf will help lead to a simple and effective golf swing.

Tim Hobby Golf Professional  

Tim Hobby is currently the Director of Golf Instruction at the Golf Club of Sonterra in San Antonio.  He has been an award winning golf coach and PGA Professional over the last 20 years.  His experience includes a successful track record of helping beginners, ladies, juniors, high school and college golfers, highly ranked amateurs and professional golfers.  He is extremely proficient at using computer software and video to analyze golf swings for student learning.

 

Playing and Coaching Highlights

  • Head Golf Coach, Baylor University 

    • Led team top six straight NCAA regional appearances and the NCAA national Championship in 2002
    • Resurrected the Men’s program from a national ranking of 130 to a consistent top 30 program
    • Led Baylor to their first Big XII Championship in 2001

    • South Texas PGA Match Play Champion 2006 .
    • Big XII Coach of the Year 2001.
    • Named Best Instructor for Private Clubs in San Antonio 2006, 2007.
    • South Texas PGA, Harvey Penick Teacher of the Year Award 2007.

Stephen D. Simmons is the contributing author, editor,  and publisher of the StrategicGolfer.com website and lesson series.  Steve is an accomplished single digit golfer and successful business person.  Steve is passionate about the game , it’s history and traditions, and the intricacies of competitive golf.  Steve has an advanced understanding of computer and video based golf instruction.
